Available Options and Alternatives
Funding a 26&2 certification usually comes down to four routes. Only one of them is a scholarship in the traditional sense, and it is the least predictable of the four.
Affordable Independent Formats
The biggest change in Bikram yoga teacher training over the past decade has nothing to do with scholarships. It is price. The traditional residential format ran for nine weeks, and in 2019 HuffPost reported that trainees paid between USD 12,500 and USD 16,600 to attend, before flights and time away from work.
Independent hybrid certifications changed that maths. At YogaFX in Bali, the standard fee for the 6-day hybrid intensive is USD 1,999, with a limited number of Early Bird places at USD 1,699. When the baseline drops by more than USD 10,000, the need for a large scholarship mostly disappears. A candidate who would once have needed a 75 percent grant to afford training can now often cover the cost through savings and a monthly plan.
Regional Studio Scholarships and Partial Grants
Some hot yoga studios run their own scholarship places, usually for a specific cohort and usually covering part of the tuition rather than all of it. They tend to fall into a few recognisable types:
- Need-based grants. A partial tuition discount for applicants who can show financial hardship, often with a written application or interview.
- Diversity and access scholarships. Places funded to widen access for communities that are underrepresented among yoga teachers, including BIPOC scholarships run by some studios.
- Service-linked awards. Occasional places for military spouses, veterans, or healthcare workers.
- Work-study arrangements. Front-desk shifts or studio cleaning in exchange for a tuition reduction. These only work at studios with a permanent location and daily classes.
The catch is consistency. A studio that offered two scholarship places last year may offer none this year, and most awards are decided cohort by cohort. Treat them as a possible bonus, not the foundation of your plan.
Instalment Plans
For most of the students who ask us about scholarships, an instalment plan ends up doing the job a scholarship would have done. It does not reduce the total price, but it removes the single biggest barrier, which is finding the full amount in one go. Employer or Studio Sponsorship
If you already practise at a hot yoga studio that is short of teachers, ask the owner directly. Some studios will pay part of a trainee's fee in return for a commitment to teach a set number of classes afterwards. It is rarely advertised, because it depends entirely on the studio's staffing needs, but it is one of the few forms of support that also comes with a guaranteed first teaching job.

A low price only matters if the certification behind it is worth having. So before comparing funding routes, it helps to be clear about what a candidate actually receives at the independent price point.
- Two certifications, not one. Graduates receive the Yoga Alliance RYT 200 registration plus a Bikram Hot 26&2 200-hour certificate. The RYT 200 is recognised by studios teaching many styles, so you are not limited to heated rooms.
- A hybrid structure. Theory, anatomy and dialogue study happen online before you travel, which is why the in-person component fits into six days in Bali instead of nine weeks.
- A small cohort. Each intake is capped at 19 students, so every trainee delivers dialogue and receives individual correction.
- Training in natural tropical heat. Classes run at around 40 degrees Celsius and 40 percent humidity from Bali's climate, not electric heaters.
- Airport pickup. Included for students arriving for the intensive.
Meals are not included, and that is deliberate. Our cohorts include vegans, pescatarians, raw-food eaters and people with gluten or nut allergies, so a fixed hotel meal plan never suits everyone. The row people overlook is lost income. A 50 percent scholarship on a USD 12,500 programme still leaves over USD 6,000 in tuition, and nine weeks without a salary can cost more than the tuition itself. A candidate on a modest income who wins that scholarship may still end up paying three or four times the total cost of a six-day hybrid format.
There is a timing cost too. Scholarship decisions often arrive a few weeks before the cohort starts, which pushes flight bookings late and flight prices up. If the answer is no, you may have missed the intake entirely. On the essay itself, specifics beat sentiment. "I want to share yoga with the world" tells a reviewer nothing. "I practise six days a week at a studio in Leeds that has lost two teachers this year, and the owner has offered me a Tuesday evening class once I qualify" tells them exactly what their scholarship would achieve. If you have been practising the 26&2 sequence for a while, say how long and how often, because consistency is the best predictor of whether a trainee finishes and goes on to teach.
Other Ways to Fund Your Training
Beyond scholarships and instalments, a few levers reliably lower the total cost of a destination training.
- Book an Early Bird place. The USD 1,699 Early Bird rate is limited, and it is the single biggest discount available on the course itself.
- Book flights early. For students flying from Europe or North America, airfare often moves the budget more than any tuition discount.
- Choose course-only and arrange your own stay. Independent accommodation in Bali can undercut a bundled rate, especially if you share with a fellow trainee.
- Check workplace development budgets. Employers in health, fitness and education sometimes fund certifications that add a skill to your role.
- Look at local grants. Some countries and regions fund adult vocational training or self-employment courses. Rules vary widely, so check with your local employment or skills office.
