What is Bikram Yoga?

Bikram Yoga is a powerful and transformative yoga practice developed by Bikram Choudhury. It follows a fixed sequence of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises, performed in a heated room of around 40°C (105°F). This sequence is designed to systematically work every part of your body—from the inside out—improving strength, flexibility, balance, and mental focus.

Each class lasts 90 minutes and is suitable for beginners and advanced students alike. The repetition and discipline in every session allow students to track their progress and build a solid foundation in their practice.

The History of Bikram Yoga

Bikram Yoga was born from the lineage of Hatha Yoga. Bikram Choudhury, a disciple of Bishnu Ghosh (brother of Paramahansa Yogananda), systematized the practice in the 1970s in the United States. He developed the 26&2 sequence to make yoga accessible to everyone, regardless of age or physical ability.

The heated environment was introduced to:

  • Promote detoxification through sweating

Bikram Choudhury is the founder of Bikram Yoga, a system of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises practiced in a heated room. Born in Calcutta, India, in 1946, Bikram began his yoga journey at the age of 4 under the guidance of Bishnu Charan Ghosh, one of the most respected physical culturists in India and the younger brother of Paramahansa Yogananda.

By the age of 13, Bikram had already won the National India Yoga Championship for three consecutive years. His deep understanding of the human body, combined with his passion for yoga, led him to develop a method that could heal injuries, restore function, and promote total well-being.
